The Last Chapter

I just want to start of by saying that I really don’t like Lieutenant Kotler. He is mean to Bruno and he is just a big snob! He is mean and thinks he knows everything and thinks he is in charge of Bruno’s house when ever Bruno’s father is not there. I was very happy in the last part of the book when he gets transferred and is no longer a part of the story.

Gretel seems like the typical big sister of the stereotypes. Thinks she is so much better and smarter that Bruno. She has a tendency to be bossy and mean to Bruno and she looks down on him a lot. She gets very angry when Bruno enters her room, even if she is in it.

The tone of the book makes me very worried because Bruno know so little about what is going on and I could just tell that something bad was going to happen. That might be the author’s goal though. He could have written it like that on purpose so readers who don’t know too much about the Holocaust can realize how serious it was and is. I had a feeling that Schmuel was going to die. I’m not sure why but it was a feeling in my gut that turned out to be correct.

I was hoping that this story was going to have a happy ending but I knew that anything that had to do with the Holocaust would not end well.

I really liked the book. It was very interesting to see how the concentration camps were from someone’s point of view that is not in a camp. I liked it because Bruno couldn’t sugar coat anything because he didn’t know what they actually were.

In a previous post I said how Bruno was being quite whiny. A year has gone past and Bruno matures a little and starts to grow quite fond of Out-With and doesn’t complain as much any more. There is actually a large difference in the amount of whining.

The end of the book really saddens be because I wonder now how many non Jews were actually executed during the Holocaust. It would have been nice if the story would have taken a turn for the better and Schmuel and Bruno would have had their chance to play together, or explore, or find Schmuel’s papa, but, not everything in life is fair and we just need to roll with the punches.
