Almost Finished Book #3!

The last time I made a new post I was only 27 pages into my book. I hadn’t gotten very far in the past few days because I was only reading it when I was in English class or if I had nothing else to do in another class. I am currently on page 133 and I still plan on reading more tonight. I decided that I better kick up my reading pace a few THOUSAND notches since I still have another book to read and they are both due back to the library on Friday :/ YIKES!

I didn’t really understand this book at first. I liked it. It wasn’t a chore for me to read but I couldn’t really understand it. Each new chapter is titled with a different time of day and a new chapter doesn’t begin on a new page. It simply continues on. This makes it longer because every page in the book is a full one. This kind of makes it dull to me because I enjoy when each chapter has a relatively worded title. It makes me stop and think about what is going to happen in this chapter, therefore, getting me more interested in the book.

Anyways, as I was saying…. I wasn’t really into this book at first but once I really hammered down and started reading it in silence, with no distractions, I couldn’t put it down. I still don’t want to but I thought that I better post some thoughts on the book before I forget to.

Each chapter switches from present day to a flash back that Mia is having. Each new chapter starts with present day and then about halfway through there is a little symbol of some sort in the middle of the page. This is so the reader knows a new chapter is starting. At the moment, I want to cry. It’s hard to give my thoughts without giving too much away for this book but I will do my best. This poor girl saw her parents bodies in the conditions that they were, and then she figures out all on her own that her brother didn’t make it either. And right now, she doesn’t know if she with either and she know that weather she stays or lives is her decision and that ironically scares her to death. I just can’t even begin to imagine something like this happening to me and I have no idea what she is going through. The author has written the book from Mia’s point of view obviously. Its Mia telling us, the reader(s), how everyone else is dealing with this. I really like that because if Mia was started talking about everything she felt after every single situation it would make Mia sound selfish and self-centered, which is nothing like Mia.

Once you bare down and get reading this book it is very easy to stay interested in it. Just to be clear, when ever Mia has a flash back it always is related to something that just happened in the present. It’s just to clarify anything that readers might not understand. It also give more back ground on the characters and certain situations, which I really like.

  1. I find the use of symbols very interesting. What did you think of them? Were they effective? What purpose do they serve?

  2. There purpose was to differentiate between the present day and a flash back. Each chapter had this symbol because it started out with present day and then switched to a flash back. I really liked that the author used these symbols because if she had just started a new chapter, it would have made it very confusing. Especially since each new chapter was titled with a different time of day.
