No Right Turn: My Final Conclusion

I finished No Right Turn in one day. There was nothing really special about the story that caught my interest, I just didn’t want to stop reading until it was done. I was expecting something totally different to happen. When Jordan started taking out the ‘Vette more and more, I thought for sure that he was going to get really upset, take it out again, and crash. I thought that he would be think ing about the day his father killed himself at one moment, and then the next thing he would remember would be waking up in a hospital bed with his mother at his side and Don in the cafeteria grabbing some coffee. That is not what happened. Since Jordan was very careful when he was taking out the ‘Vette and Don never suspected anything, Jordan got a little smug. One of the kids at Jordan’s school, Adam, was bragging about his classic GTO. Jordan wants to put Adam in his place so he tells him, and all the freshman listening to Adam brag, that his ’76 Stingray would beat him any day. They end up racing and we don’t really know who exactly wins. They call it a tie. Adams car was definitely faster that the ‘Vette but Jordan turns on the NOS, even though he know it’s a risk.

Jordan eventually gets caught in the ‘Vette. He is going seventy in a thirty zone and the cops start chasing him. Jordan uses the NOS again and loses the cop. Since Don’s Corvette has a very recognizable license plate, and the policeman was Don’s brother-in-law, there is no doubt that when Jordan is pulling up to Don’s house, the police are there. Don doesn’t press any charges and tells Jordan that he can use the car with Don’s permission after ninety days of probation is up. I was expecting Don to be furious with Jordan at this point. He was, after all, taking his baby without his permission. But, Don wasn’t really upset at all. He knew about Jordan’s dad all along. He knew exactly what had happened and how Jordan had reacted to it afterwards. He considers Jordan a hero for what he did. The courage he portrayed when he was trying to do CPR on his deceased father.

Don suggests that Jordan tell his mom everything that happened, so he does. The first thing his mom says is “You’re dad was sick Jordan”. She begins telling Jordan how his father was clinically depressed and had been for years. This is really hard for Jordan to take, but with this new information Jordan can finally start dealing with his father’s death in a healthy way.

I was really surprised with this because my predictions were Jordan getting into an accident but still getting in trouble for his inexcusable actions. For me, I liked how the book actually ended better then how I thought it was going to happen.
